MRI

What is an MRI?

An MRI is a noninvasive and painless procedure using radio waves and powerful magnets linked to a computer to create remarkably clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues without the use of radiation.

Unlike with CT scan, which uses X-rays to identify tissue density, magnetic resonance imaging uses magnetism and radio waves to scan the water content of tissue. Tissues and organs have distinct water contents that can be changed by diseases. These changes are detected by an MRI, helping physicians with early diagnosis of a variety of neurological disorders, heart and vascular disease, stroke, breast disease, and joint and musculoskeletal disorders.

Each MRI produces hundreds of pictures from side to side, top to bottom, and front to back. These pictures show the difference between normal and diseased tissue and enable doctors to determine what the inside of a particular structure looks like. This makes it very useful in diagnosing abnormalities.

How can I schedule my appointment?

Many MRI exams require prior authorization from your insurance company. For this reason, your physician’s office will often work with our scheduling team to obtain authorization and schedule your exam at a time convenient for you. It is important to allow at least five days for your physician office to obtain authorization so that you are not left with hefty out-of-pocket expenses.

If you already have an order from your physician but have questions about the prior authorization process, or if you wish to check on the status of your upcoming exam, please call (808) 263-5166 and then press 1.

How will I get my results?

Your results will be forwarded to your ordering physician within 24 hours of your exam. (Please contact your referring physician to learn when you can expect your results from their office.)

You can also access all results through MyAdventistHealth.
