Preparing for Childbirth

Resources to help you feel ready

Preparing for “the big day” can sometimes feel overwhelming. It is natural to feel anxious, especially if you are expecting your first baby. Being prepared can help lower your anxiety.

What to bring

When you are a few weeks from your due date, pack a suitcase with the items you will want to have during your stay in the Birth Center.

Some items we suggest bringing include:

  • Robe and slippers for walking during labor
  • Focal point
  • Birth ball
  • Favorite music with portable player
  • Sour candy on a stick
  • Lotion or oil for massage
  • Chapstick
  • Deck of cards, magazine, book
  • Nutritious snack for partner
  • Contact lens case and eyeglasses
  • Warm socks
  • Vibrating pillow or massager
  • Items for back massage
  • Change for the vending machine
  • Band for hair
  • Paper and pen
  • Camera and/or video recorder
  • Your pillow with colored pillowcases
  • Two or three nightgowns
  • Toiletry articles
  • Hair care items
  • Cosmetics
  • Baby book
  • Birth announcements
  • Going home outfit for mom — early pregnancy size
  • Mouthwash and toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Going home outfit and blanket for baby
  • Phone numbers and people to notify of the birth

If you are planning to nurse, bring:

  • Nursing bras
  • Breastfeeding book
  • Nursing gown

For the ride home, bring:

  • Car seat
  • Baby blanket
