Family Medicine Residency Curriculum

As a traditional teaching institution, Adventist Health White Memorial provides residents with strong, participatory, hands-on experiences in patient care.

In addition to scheduled rotations, residents have opportunities to participate in community activities through health fairs, sports physicals and departmental meetings. Our faculty make teaching and supervision their first priority — meaning residents benefit from a learning environment with dedicated, specially trained leaders.

Family Residency Curriculum

Our Family Residency curriculum has been designed:

• To satisfy all requirements which qualify program graduates to take the certifying examination of the American Board of Family medicine.
• To meet all of the common requirements and Family Medicine specialty-specific program training as stipulated by the ACGME.
• To meet the training needs of physicians who will require strong ambulatory care and inpatient skills and need the most practical and relevant education for modern practice.
• To include unique and enriching learning experiences to assist program graduates in roles which require special skills in:
  • Behavioral health
  • Community medicine
  • Geriatrics
  • Managed care
  • Management of health systems
  • Patient-centered medical homes
  • Patient education
  • Preventive medicine
  • Quality improvement

PGY-1 Rotations

Rotations include:

• Critical Care — 4 weeks
• Family Medicine Service — 16 weeks
• Newborn Nursery — 1 weeks
• Night Shift — 2 weeks
• Obstetrics — 7 weeks
• Orientation* — 4 weeks
• Newborn/Clinic — 1 weeks
• NICU – 2 weeks
• Pediatrics Inpatient — 7 weeks
• Pediatrics Outpatient — 2 weeks
• Surgery — 3 weeks

*Orientation includes:

• Introduction to Ambulatory patient care
• Introduction to behavioral sciences and community medicine
• Management of Health Systems
• Procedural skills
• Qualifications in advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support
• Team building

First-year residents are assigned to one to two half-day clinics per week in the Family Health Center.

First-year residents are assigned to random weekend 24-hour call

PGY-2 Rotations

Rotations include:

• Adolescent Medicine — 2 weeks
• Addiction Medicine – 2 weeks
• AIDS — 1 week
• Behavioral Science/Community Medicine — 2 weeks
• Cardiology — 4 weeks
• Elective – 4 weeks
• Emergency Medicine – 2 weeks
• Family Medicine Service — 14 weeks
• Geriatrics — 4 weeks
• Gynecology — 4 weeks
• Management of Health Systems — 2 weeks
• Night Shift — 6 weeks
• Pediatrics Emergency Department — 3 weeks
• Pediatrics Outpatient — 2 weeks
• Radiology – 1 week

Second-year residents are assigned three to four half-day clinics per week in the Family Health Center.

Second-year residents are assigned to random weekend 24-hour call and one 24-hour holiday call.

PGY-3 Rotations

Rotations include:

• Addiction Medicine — 2 weeks
• Adolescent Medicine – 2 weeks
• Behavioral Medicine — 1 week
• Clinical Chief — 4 weeks
• Electives — 14 Weeks
• Emergency Medicine – 2 weeks
• Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) — 2 weeks
• Family Medicine Service — 6 weeks
• Night Shift — 6 weeks
• Orthopedics — 6 weeks
• Pediatrics Outpatient — 2 weeks
• Sports Medicine — 2 weeks

Third-year residents are assigned to four to five half-day clinics per week in the Family Health Center.

Third-year residents may receive up to one week for study week, or to complete Continuing Medical Education (CME) focused on board preparation programs which will prepare them for practice.

Third-year residents may schedule up to 3 weeks of an International Elective.

Third-year residents are assigned to random weekend 24-hour call and one 24-hour holiday call.
