Northern California Lifestyle Brings General Surgeon to Ukiah

General UKIAH, CA – After completing medical school and residency training in Southern California, Dr. Randal Schafer started a general surgery practice in Salinas.  Soon he was extremely busy.  Wanting to raise his children in a more rural area, eventually he and his wife headed north to the small town of Colville in northeast Washington State.  There he practiced general surgery for the next 15 years.'

“I definitely enjoyed the rural practice experience and seeing my patients out and about in the community,” says Dr. Schafer who continued, “However, after 15 cold snowy winters it was time to begin looking for a warmer climate.”  He began exploring multiple practice opportunities, and after prayerful consideration he decided to join the medical staff at Ukiah Valley Medical Center (UVMC). “I was impressed with the medical staff and mission of UVMC, and I really look forward to working with my new professional colleagues, nurses, and other hospital staff,” shares Dr. Schafer.

As you might guess, with a specialty of general surgery, Dr. Schafer performs a wide range of services.  These include laparoscopic procedures, gallbladders, appendixes, hernias, colons, and trauma etc.
When asked what a patient could expect from being in his care, Dr. Schafer said, “I really enjoy spending time with my patients, listening and answering their questions.  I want every patient to feel comfortable about undergoing a surgery. It gives me pleasure when I can help alleviate a patient’s fears and put them at ease.”

“I also really like the technical aspects of surgery and working with my hands.  I’ve always enjoyed mechanics, woodworking, building, and electrical work.  During the latter part of medical school, general surgery was a natural fit.”

Dr. Schafer will be joined in Ukiah by his wife Lori, an optometrist, and their four teenage daughters.  In their free time the family enjoys classical music, gardening, canoeing, and hiking.  His daughters love playing their piano and brass instruments, flower arranging, and painting.
Dr. Schafer will be practicing at the general surgery office located at 246 Hospital Drive in Ukiah. Please call (707) 463-8011 or visit www.uvmc.org for more information.
