Willits, CA - March is often known as the first month of spring, but for Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital (HMH) Chef, Kyle Evans, and Registered Dietitian, Annie Dogali, it is also a month to make our community aware of how nutrition and food consumption play a key role in the health of the community.

According to Dogali, HMH partners with the community in several ways to educate and inform on proper nutrition practices, “We offer an ongoing diabetes support group, nutrition classes, and smoking cessation classes. We also partners with local organizations such as the North Coast Striders, and the Frank R. Howard Foundation (Foundation) for local activities and events.”

Something unique about HMH is the fact that they also source locally grown produce to provide healthy meals for hospital patients. “We are truly blessed to have access to the Commonwealth Garden, which produces healthy organic fresh produce,” said Evans who continued, “I am then able to share fresh food harvested a few hours ago with patients and our staff. Food just doesn’t get any fresher than this!”

As a challenge to the Willits Community, Evans is giving an open invitation to community members, “During National Nutrition month, I really challenge you to think about what you put in your body, how does it make you feel? Try eating healthier. Come in and have lunch in our cafeteria. If you’re struggling with figuring out how to prepare healthier meals I encourage you to give Annie or I a call. After all our job is to help keep you healthy.”

Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital is a critical access hospital offering comprehensive services which include; Emergency Services, Health Education, Laboratory, Medical Imaging, Orthopedic Joint Center of Northern California, Physical Therapy, and advanced Surgical Services – serving Mendocino and surrounding counties.
