GAMC Has Lowest STEMI Treatment Time in County

Awards & Recognition From January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013, Glendale Adventist Medical Center had the lowest door-to-balloon time out of 34 LA County hospitals. Door-to-balloon time is the amount of time between the heart attack patient arriving at the doors of the emergency department and the opening of the clogged cardiac artery in the cardiac catheterization lab. The more quickly the artery is opened, the more quickly blood flow and oxygen can be delivered to the heart muscle. Quicker times mean heart muscle is saved,

GAMC 2013 door to balloon time was the lowest in LA County hospitals, ranging from 42 to 75 minutes. “Glendale Adventist Medical Center is committed to providing this top quality heart care to our community,” says Karen R. Brandt, FNP-C, MSN, vice president, Ancillary Services, GAMC.

The hospital is designated as a STEMI (heart attack) receiving center (SRC) by Los Angeles County Emergency Services. As an SRC, when emergency medical personnel confirm a heart attack/STEMI diagnosis, they will bypass other non-SRC hospitals and bring a patient directly to the GAMC emergency department for treatment. STEMI is a medical term that means heart attack (ST Elevation MI).

The county review team spoke of GAMC’s program in high regard and congratulated GAMC’s STEMI team for exceptional treatment times, as well as exceptional inter-hospital transfer and treatment times. The STEMI program at GAMC was identified as the number one program in LA County without comparison.

"I am incredibly proud that the County review team spoke of our program in very high regard and that we were identified as a ‘top performer.' With the organized response between paramedics and the hospital, we are providing a higher level of excellence in service for our community,” said Brandt.

Paramedics in Los Angeles County rush victims of heart attack or chest pain to the nearest hospitals – like Glendale Adventist Medical Center – that are designated as specialty heart attack centers. The hospital has had this program designation from the County for the past 6 years.
