Volley in the Valley Tennis Tournament Raises $100,000 for St. Helena Hospital and Adventist Heart Institute

ST. HELENA, CA, May 13, 2013 – The highly anticipated Volley in the Valley Tennis Tournament took place on Sunday, May 5 and Monday, May 6, 2013, at Meadowood Napa Valley. Over fifty local tennis players participated in the tournament to raise much-needed funds for St. Helena Hospital and Adventist Heart Institute. Charitable donations from the event totaled $100,000—a noteworthy 40% increase from the previous two years.

"We are thankful for the support of players and sponsors who contributed to our goal," says Terry Newmyer, President and CEO of St. Helena Hospital. "The funds from Volley in the Valley will go directly to programs, equipment, and technology to improve the community’s heart health."

Participants of Volley in the Valley enjoyed four doubles Round Robin tournaments, three tennis skill games, dinner at The Napa Valley Reserve, and an awards ceremony where prizes were handed out. During Monday’s lunch at Meadowood, participants watched a match between four top-rated UC Berkeley collegiate tennis players.

Highlights of the spectacular dinner at The Napa Valley Reserve included speakers Peter Magowan, a past San Francisco Giants’ president and managing general partner, along with hospital doctor, Gan Dunnington, MD, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in treating patients with arrhythmia, and Jeff Greenwald, author of

The Best Tennis of Your Life and Fearless Tennis.

"The tournament just keeps getting better due to the amazing support from our neighbors and local businesses," commented Fred Miller, Tournament Director. "We look forward to seeing everyone back on the courts next year on May 4 and May 5, 2014 for this wonderful cause."
