UVMC Appoints New Director of Quality

According to the late Stephen Covey, “A cardinal principle of Total Quality escapes too many managers: you cannot continuously improve interdependent systems and processes until you progressively perfect interdependent, interpersonal relationships,” which according to Gwen Matthews, CEO of Ukiah Valley Medical Center is a quality in which, Karene Bejarano, registered nurse, excels at.

“Karene has such a passion for our clinical care, and has truly enjoyed her engagement with our physicians and nursing staff in this work, and has willingly accepted this scope of service. She will report directly to Marvin Trotter, M.D., Chief Medical Officer on our executive team. Karene will also be collaborating with the members of the Quality and Patient Safety Council at UVMC," shared Matthews.

When asked what she plans to accomplish in her new roles, Bejarano said, “I want every employee at UVMC to know the importance of their role in the quality that shapes a patient’s outcome, no matter how far removed from the actual daily activities of patient care.”

Bejarano continued, “In some instances, all it takes is a simple recognition. Perhaps giving someone a smile, pat-on-the-back, hand shake or helping someone that looks lost. No matter how insignificant you think it might be, these simple acts of kindness could make a lasting impact that could change someone’s life forever. All it takes is one person, at one moment, making the right choice that reinforces a simple statement that, “What YOU do, matters.”

Bejarano assumed her new roles as director of quality, risk management, and customer service at UVMC, on August 6, 2012.
