Doctors' Day Contest Winner: "She is not just my doctor but a confidant"

Contest

Nearly 30 patients from across the Valley expressed appreciation for their physicians as part of a Doctors’ Day contest in March The patients took time to write notes about their doctors, which were entered into a drawing for a Wii and Wii Active gaming system. The winning entry came from Francesca Goleman Lemoore, a patient of Dr. Nahid Eskandari at the Community Care-Lemoore clinic.
“She is kind and actually listens. I can talk to her freely about my future and she is honest. Without her, I still would be sitting wondering ‘what’s wrong?’” Goleman said.
“I am deeply grateful to her for her honesty, knowledge and how she helps me looking on the bright side. Thank you for letting me celebrate my doctor.”

For: Dr. Bhupinder S. Chatrath
Oncology and Hematology
I first met Dr. Chatrath in his office in Hanford for the first time. My husband had just had surgery for colon cancer and we had an appointment for further treatments of chemo and radiation. Dr. Chatrath was very serious and very professional but he was very kind and very understanding. He knew we were scared and he calmed us down, told us about the treatments, explained everything he was going to do, made sure my husband understood everything that was said. He also made sure my husband had all the medicine he might need before he started treatment. He always makes time to talk to my sons who live out of town to tell them how the treatment was working, my husband never ran out of medicine because he always made sure he had enough. My husband passed away and was very happy with Dr. Chatrath’s services. If someone deserves recognition it’s Dr. Chatrath and his staff.

I was recently referred to Dr. Bhupinder Chatrath as you can imagine the thought of being referred to an Oncologist/Hematologist is a bit unsettling in itself! But I must say that Dr. Chatrath and his staff have made this referral much easier! Dr. Chatrath is very gracious and kind. He explained what they were concerned about and provided me with the information I needed to understand the whole process. His staff have been excellent also, answering questions and just being so pleasant! Thankfully my issue is pretty small in the picture of medical issues, but knowing that there are talented, caring physicians in our area makes a big difference!

For: Dr. Kenny Mai
Orthopedics
It is with great-pleasure that I am able to share my thoughts about my orthopedic-surgeon!  Dr. Kenny Mai, from my very-first-visit, is always respectful, humble & friendly. "I trust Dr. Mai with my life and my BONES! Dr. Mai's staff scores 100% Plus, too, as being very helpful and respectful toward all of Dr. Mai's patient's.  "We love them all!" I am not entering to win any prize, I don't even know what it is or how it works, I just had to share my thoughts regarding my-trusted-doctor.  (Surgeon.)

For: Dr. Robert Woods
Internal Medicine
I am writing this letter to show my appreciation and confidence in Dr. Robert Woods. As a fairly new patient, I was somewhat skeptical about switching to a new doctor. I wasn’t sure about the kind of care I would receive. My first visit was the ordinarily checkup including history, blood work, etc. My second visit landed me in the hospital where Dr. Woods took excellent care of me. Dr. Woods has the most genuine bedside manner, he actually cares. Dr. Woods checks medication and is not a “pill pusher”. Since becoming his patient, Dr. Woods has reduced my medication and has me feeling so much better. I am extremely happy I chose Dr. Woods as my doctor. I would also like to add what a wonderful staff Dr. Woods has working for him. Bravo Dr. Woods.

For: Dr. Jay D. Kerr
Family Practice
“Hi, my name is Dr. Kerr and I will be your admitting physician.” Those are the words I heard from a tall, bearded man who walked into my ER room early one morning. I don’t remember much about that day, but I do remember his friendly smile and sincere voice. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and had extremely low blood pressure which, in turn, created admission to Adventist Medical Center for an eight day stay. Everyday, Dr. Kerr would come in to check on me and inform me of my progress. He didn’t just talk to me as his patient, he talked to me as my friend. We would then discuss family, children and what we liked to do in our spare time. I feel God truly blessed me with a physician that has a unique sense of humor, passion for his job and a desire to heal his patients. This was especially important as I am not a resident of Hanford and was very fortunate to be assigned such a compassionate Doctor. Thank you Dr. Kerr, you are my hero!

For: Dr. Jay D. Kerr
It is very easy to recognize doctors that are specialists because they deal with extraordinary situations and “come to the rescue” of the patient in times of crisis. I choose to recognize my family practitioner: Dr. Jay Kerr. Dr. Kerr is a “specialist” in his own right as he takes care of our daily medical needs and he is a knowledgeable “portal” to other specialists. Not long ago my husband had a medical emergency. He wasn’t feeling well and was having trouble breathing. He called Dr. Kerr and was seen within the hour. Dr. Kerr sent him to the ER and got him in touch with the necessary specialists. But Dr. Kerr’s care didn’t stop there. He monitored his care and checked on him while he was in the hospital, often more frequently than the specialists. He didn’t “just hand him off” to other doctors.

For: Dr. Jay D. Kerr
Medicine today has become extremely complex and, in this environment, one of the main strengths of an outstanding doctor is knowing who is best qualified to treat a problem. Dr. Jay Kerr is such a doctor. A consummate professional, he maintains a wide network of highly professional specialists and he does not hesitate to provide a referral while maintaining contact with the patient to ensure the very best of care is provided. He has come to the rescue of our family many times during a health crisis and always provided us informed, caring, loyal care while securing for us the best local medical talent available. He does not mince words, seeing himself as a partner with the patient and requiring his patients to make a reasonable effort to participate in their good health. In short, he is the first class doctor, professional, humble, caring and straight forward.

For: Dr. Allan A. Knudson
Family Practice
Dr. Allan Knudson has been our family doc for many years. He has cared for our entire family, including my children from childhood into adulthood, and has been a part of our lives through many changes, transitions and major family losses. He is truly a dedicated medical professional. Dr. Knudson is the epitome of a “family doctor” in a time where physicians look toward maximized reimbursement Dr. Knudson still takes time for each individual person. He is always available for a phone consultation and has even been known to call us with our lab results never leaving it to his office staff if there is a concern. I even remember Dr. Knudson making a house call or two when a family member had an allergic reaction. It was not above him to say “let me come by the house to take a look.” It is comforting to know when you have a health emergency your doctor is just a phone call away, and is willing to talk to you about what is going on. Being a physician is not just a job to Dr. Knudson – it is his calling. As a new physician he took an oath to serve and do no harm; he has spent his lifetime dedicated to this moral ethical oath to serve and practice his art of medicine. He is to be honored and respected for following such a noble life mission. My family is extremely grateful to Dr. Knudson for his tireless dedication and commitment to being a small town family physician. In a society that doesn’t always give credit to a family practice physician, I counter that they are what hold the practice of medicine together especially in a rural community. How many physicians can say they have known someone from the day they were born until they started having children? There are many families that Dr. Knudson has been an integral part of their lives, from birth to grave. Truly that is a career to be honored, respected and revered. Bravo Dr. Knudson! You are to be celebrated for your lifetime dedication to the practice of medicine. Our small community of Hanford has been fortunate to have you as a part of our lives and we celebrate you this Doctor’s Day!

For: Dr. Allan A. Knudson
I would like to give special recognition for Dr Knudson, one time a patient of mine was in distress in the middle of the night, I called Dr Knudson for the patients immediate needs, aside from Dr Knudson giving me orders on the phone, Dr Knudson came to the unit and saw the patient himself in the wee hours of the night. Also what really standout is that Dr Knudson had expressed appreciation and recognition to me by giving me a pat on my shoulder and stating "I'm glad you nurses at night are on top of things, I appreciate you have called me about this patients condition". That statement of Dr Knudson really made a big impact to me, knowing that I am appreciated, respected and recognized for my efforts to take good care of my patients. I just think about Dr Knudson's statement and I'm inspired to come to work.

For: Dr. Shailesh Shetty
Cardiology
I am a 78 year old female who had, thankfully, been free of any health problems. However, in April 2010, I experienced a TIZ and was hospitalized for 3 days. Then in August my sonogram on my carotid artery came back seriously blocked and I needed surgery. However, my vascular surgeon wanted a good health report on my heart before he would operate. I was referred to Dr. Shailesh Shetty, a certified cardiologist in Selma. He ordered and performed necessary tests and cleared me for my surgery. I am rather a testy and opinionated individual but, with a smile, always he patiently tolerated me. I have since had my surgery and Dr. Shetty is still monitoring my recovery and scheduled me for a sonogram in the near future. If you are in need of a heart specialist, he’s your MAN!

For: Dr. Sheikh Latif
Vascular Surgery
I found Dr. Latif in the newspaper and was so happy to find a Vascular Surgeon here in the home area as before I was driving to Visalia. It was hard for me so I chose Dr. Latif and I’m glad I did. The staff is the greatest and most helpful and caring during surgery and after. I am so pleased and thankful. I had heaviness in walking or standing even at night with cramps in my legs and had to walk the floor or put my feet in a hot bath for some relief. On my first visit I talked with Dr. Latif and his staff and I knew then that’s where I needed to be, to be taken care of. After surgery I came home, fixed our dinner and felt great, no pain and I am still going strong!

For: Dr. Lancy Allyn
Orthopedic Surgery
When my daughter broke her wrist snow-boarding, Dr. Allyn evaluated her in the ER and determined surgery would be necessary. He arranged for her to have a procedure and did a beautiful repair job. Since that time, he has been so kind, asking about her progress on at least a dozen different occasions and patiently answering all of a worried mother’s questions. Though I have worked with Dr. Allyn for many years, as a patient, I find I have a new found respect and appreciation for him for his skill and compassion.

For: Dr. Nahid Eskandari
Family Practice
In 2008 I started to have severe pain, numbness in my lower back and legs. I was referred to Adventist Health clinic in Lemoore. After seeing a few doctors there with no helpful results, other than a CT scan. I by the bless of God, found Dr. Eskandari. It was time for my female exam. From that moment on, we had an immediate rapport. I explained something was wrong and two chiropractors said I wasn’t a candidate and I was quickly getting worse. She referred me for a MRI and found out, not only nerve damage disc disease and again referred me to surgeons until I finally found out I have neuropathy stenosis. I am now waiting for surgery. I know her kindness and the way she took me serious is the reason I have a chance, not to end up wheelchair bound. She is not just my doctor but a confidant, this all happened in 2 ½ years. I thank her with all my heart. She is kind and actually listens. I can talk to her freely about my future and she is honest. Without her I still would be sitting wondering “what’s wrong”. To me she has treated me with respect, answered all questions, even when I’m sure it’s not easy to tell a woman who just turned 50 that there is a chance I will be in a wheelchair, before major surgery. I am deeply grateful to her for her honesty, knowledge and how she helps me look on the bright side. Thank you for letting me celebrate my doctor.

For: Dr. Nahid Eskandari
I am proud to say I have a great doctor names Nahid Eskandari, MD. This woman is wonderful. I believe our town is very fortunate to have her serving our community. First let me explain I am 72 years old and have seen many doctors but no one compares to Dr. Eskandari. She is very patient, understanding and caring every time I see her. When I do to her office I never wait more than five minutes in her waiting room. I never feel rushed during my visit with her. Her staff is great. I believe because Dr. Eskandari must be a great boss. She explains to me sometimes three or four times because I have trouble hearing and I have never seen her get impatient with me. Dr. Eskandari is very professional. She always greets me with a smile and after my visit I leave smiling. I think Dr. Eskandari deserves an award for the best caring doctor in Hanford.

Dr. Sahas, he is great, pts love him, one of his pts told me how wonderful he is. I like him very much and also other nurses feel the same way. If all the doctors are like him, we are indeed the best place to work, to practice and to receive care.

For: Dr. Sudesh Nagavalli
Internal Medicine
My name is Aida Burk and I am a patient of Dr. Sudesh Nagavalli associated with Adventist Health. He is my primary internal medicine doctor who I am very grateful  and honored to have him as my doctor. I came from Burbank, CA 4 years ago. Doctors from Saint Joseph and also Kaiser. None of them took care of my health like Dr. Nagavalli. I have chronic illness and thanks to him he had referred me to the right specialist doctors. If would not come to Hanford, CA and see Dr. Nagavalli I would have carcinoma all over and Dr. Nagavalli referred me to a surgeon and I had my thyroid taken out and thank God no more carcinoma. I also have chronic heart problems and he referred me again to a cardiology and Dr. Nagavalli is treating me for high cholesterol and blood pressure. I am in a low income and one of the medications is very expensive he give me samples so I can continue to be healthy. No matter what problem I have Dr. Nagavalli does his best to take care of me and also my husband. He is very professional and very caring. I am very please highly recommend Dr. Nagavalli like I said before I am very happy to have him as my doctor.

For: Dr. Randy Beddoe
Family Practice
As a member of a military family, I had no choice of doctors.  We would arrive at a new duty station and be assigned a doctor.  My husband’s retirement presented my first opportunity to choose a doctor.  A friend recommended Dr. Randy Beddoe.  From my first visit, I knew I had made the right choice. In every appointment with Dr. Beddoe, all of my needs are met.  He addresses my concern, then reviews my chart to be sure I am up-to-date in preventive care, like mammograms, colonoscopy, etc.  Dr. Beddoe is a thorough clinician; however, he looks at the whole person, as well.  I have cried and prayed with Dr. Beddoe and feel physically and emotionally healthier for it. If I sometimes have to wait past my appointment time with Dr. Beddoe, I don’t mind.  I know he is with another patient, taking the extra time that I so appreciate.

For: Dr. Gordon Thurston
Family Practice
Dr. Gordon Thurston is one of the most caring doctors I’ve ever met, and I’ve met quite a few health care professionals throughout the state and across the country. I see him when I feel bad, and he makes me feel better. His jovial attitude always cheers me up. It’s obvious he’s not in health care for the business, but for the caring. From his 100 year-old patient to the many children, all agree he’s special. Many residents in Avenal were delivered by Dr. Thurston, and they not only stayed with him though the years, they now bring their children to him. He treats them all with a kindness and warmth not seen in many doctors these days. He is a one of a kind doctor, and an outstanding musician. Avenal is lucky to have such a phenomenal doctor. I know it’s selfish, but I hope he never retires.

For: Dr. Edythe W. Stewart
General Surgery
In October of 2010 Dr. Stewart performed a surgery on me in conjunction with another doctor from out of town.  After the surgery, there were a few complications, nothing serious, but they had told me to call if I needed ANYTHING, so I called.  Dr. Stewart was in surgery all day that day, but made arrangements to leave surgery, come to the office, perform a minor procedure on me, then go back to finish the surgery at the hospital.  You would have never know she had anything else do that day but take care of me. It has been my privilege to be a patient of Dr. Stewart.
