What's Happening at SJCH - June 2010

Health Alert ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF SJCH’S GROSSMAN BURN CENTER
It’s hard to believe, but as of June 10, it will be the first anniversary for the Grossman Burn Center at SJCH. Before the burn center opened here in Bakersfield, no one quite realized the overwhelming need for this facility. Treating burn victims here in Kern County has given so many families peace of mind that their injured loved ones will receive excellent burn care without the burden of travel to other locations. This is just one reason the community has responded so positively to the burn center’s arrival with an outpouring of financial support and donations. Of note, this is also National Sun Safety Week and our burn center care providers would be happy to speak to the dangers people face out there in the summer sun, offering valuable tips and information.

CELEBRATE SAFE & SOBER DURING GRADUTATION SEASON
It’s an issue that comes up each and every graduation season, but it always bears repeating: Celebrate safe and sober during this graduation season. SJCH’s Emergency Department medical staff knows full well the results of young people failing to heed the annual warnings to have fun, but to do so in a safe manner. ER physicians can speak to the dangers that can accompany the partying during graduation season.

NATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH WEEK JUNE 14-20
Men are usually right on time when it comes to changing the oil on that classic car or custom chrome motorcycle. But what about their own health? Do men regularly see their doctor for check-ups and appropriate preventative tests? Well, not always – which is why spreading the word about National Men’s Health Week is so important. At SJCH, a host of medical experts could be made available for media opportunities and can list the many, many reasons men should pay attention to their bodies just as much – if not more – that those “toys” in the garage.

THE ULTIMATE FATHER’S DAY GIFT: A NEW BABY!
It’s bound to happen – SJCH will more than likely be the site of fathers becoming fathers on Father’s Day! As SJCH arranged during the Mother’s Day holiday weekend, the same access can be set up for the new fathers that get to celebrate their special day with the very most special gift of all: a new baby! SJCH will monitor the births on June 19, Father’s Day, and can accommodate interviews with those families who give permission. The Marketing Department representatives at SJCH will have cell phone numbers and the media pager number available to all media. (Please see contact information on this release.)

FREE IMMUNIZATIONS WILL BE MOBILE ALL SUMMER LONG
Preparing your child for kindergarten this summer? With today’s economy, even co-pays and the cost of immunizations can be daunting for families. SJCH’s Mobile Immunizations Unit – the only hospital-based immunizations program – will be holding free clinics throughout the month of June. Children ages 0-5 years old can receive their immunizations at no charge. There are no qualifications to get the immunizations, other than bringing along an immunization card.
