Pre and Post Surgery

If you are about to undergo a surgical procedure, it’s important you follow your doctor’s instructions. Failing to do so will usually result in having to postpone your surgery because having anesthesia with the wrong conditions can cause serious problems for you.

Pre-surgery/procedure checklist

  • No food after midnight before a surgical procedure
  • No water or other beverages within eight hours of your procedure
  • Please leave your valuables at home, including cell phone and jewelry
  • Please do not wear contact lenses to your procedure
  • Bring your insurance card and a valid government issued photo ID
  • Shower and dress in freshly laundered clothing the morning of your procedure to reduce the risk of infection after your surgical procedure.
  • Take medications per your doctor's instructions and bring your medication bottles or a list of medication with your current dosage

Before your surgery

Make sure you arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home. If you have had sedation or anesthesia, you are not permitted to drive for 24 hours after your procedure. A taxi is not advisable unless you are accompanied by a responsible adult.

You should also arrange to have a responsible adult stay with you the rest of the day following your procedure. Eating and bathing can be difficult without assistance.

Consult with your physician regarding medications that are usually taken in the morning (like medications for blood pressure, diabetes, seizures, heart conditions and Parkinson's). You should also refrain from smoking.

The morning of surgery

  • Please follow your physician's instructions regarding arrival time
  • Do not use lotion, oils or perfume after bathing and remove nail polish if you are having hand or foot surgery
  • Shower in the morning and wear loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Bring your hearing aids, glasses and case, and dentures and denture case
  • Bring your current medication bottles or a list of medications with your current dosage
  • If you are staying overnight and use a breathing machine such as a CPAP, bring your machine, mask and hose

For younger patients

  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany patients who are minors and remain on site until the patient is discharged
  • If your child has a favorite toy or blanket, please bring it with you
  • Parents are able to stay with their child until surgery and may rejoin the child as soon as the child awakens
  • A tour of the facility can be arranged by special request
  • For infants who use a bottle, please bring a bottle and formula

After surgery

  • Generally, you will be ready for discharge within 30 minutes to two hours after your surgery (depending on the type of procedure you are having)
  • Post-operative instructions will be reviewed with you and any prescriptions ordered by your physician will be given to you upon discharge
  • If you have had sedation or anesthesia refrain from driving or drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours after your procedure
