The Importance of Sports Physicals for Young Athletes

Sports are a great way for kids to stay active, build confidence and make friends. But before they hit the field or court, it’s important to make sure they’re healthy and safe to play. That’s why sports physicals—also called preparticipation physical examinations (PPEs)—are such an important step.

What to expect at a sports physical

A sports physical has two main parts: a medical history review and a physical exam. Providers look at past injuries, family health history and any ongoing conditions such as asthma or diabetes. They also check your child’s height, weight, vision, heart, lungs, joints and flexibility. This gives your provider a clear picture of your child’s overall health and readiness for sports.

Why they matter

Sports physicals help prevent injuries and health problems before they happen. They can identify concerns early—such as breathing issues, previous concussions or growth plate concerns—that may affect safety during play. These exams also open the door for conversations about nutrition, supplements and healthy habits. In Oregon, students in grades seven to 12 must have a sports physical every two years. But even if it’s not required, it’s a smart choice for every young athlete.

Keeping kids safe on the field

Even healthy athletes are at risk for bruises, sprains, heat exhaustion or broken bones. That’s why it takes teamwork between parents, coaches and providers to keep kids safe. Using proper gear, warming up, staying hydrated and speaking up about pain are all key to preventing injury and ensuring kids enjoy the game.
