Rheumatology Services Closer to Home
Mar 16, 2026
For many Windward O’ahu families, rheumatology appointments used to mean months of waiting or traveling across the island. That has changed. Thanks to new rheumatology services at Adventist Health Castle, you can now receive expert care much closer to home. The services are led by Daniel Magliulo, MD, and Audrey M. Hagiwara, MD, both board-certified internal medicine physicians who specialize in rheumatology – and both born and raised on the Windward side. After receiving their medical training elsewhere, they have returned to the community that shaped them.
Dr. Magliulo completed his fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. He says he was inspired to practice medicine by his father’s long-standing primary care practice in Kailua. “Seeing firsthand the difference a physician can make in their community solidified my decision to also practice medicine,” says Dr. Magliulo.
Dr. Hagiwara, who completed a fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, credits her decision to specialize in rheumatology to her father’s experience being treated for severe osteoarthritis in his knees. “Witnessing my father’s transformation after being treated for severe osteoarthritis, I decided to pursue a career in medicine,” says Dr. Hagiwara.
What conditions to rheumatologists treat?
The practice of rheumatology spans more than 100 conditions, including all types of arthritis, osteoporosis, gout, and lupus. Rheumatic diseases usually are associated with inflammation, such as swelling and redness, and are accompanied by pain. These diseases can severely affect a person’s quality of life and ability to perform daily tasks.
Adventist Health Castle’s rheumatologists take an integrated and holistic approach to treatment of rheumatic diseases, which may include implementation of exercise, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and diet in addition to anti-inflammatory medications and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic therapies.
Rheumatologists Daniel Magliulo, MD, and Audrey M. Hagiwara, MD, are accepting new patients at Adventist Health Castle clinics in Kailua, Kāne’ohe, and Honolulu.
