Opening Doors for Tomorrow’s Healthcare Providers

Adventist Health Castle is working to transform the healthcare experience of people in our area by prioritizing health equity. The entire community benefits when everybody can achieve their greatest level of health.

One way to support health equity and help build the future is with efforts such as the Compass Healthcare Career Explorers Program. This hands-on initiative is designed for people 16 years and older. It’s especially valuable for undergraduates and adults considering a career in healthcare, because it makes healthcare more approachable and lets participants experience the profession firsthand.

After completing orientation and training, participants are eligible for roles that match their career goals. They’ll experience multiple departments across Adventist Health Castle, including central supply, imaging, laboratory, outpatient services, and nursing.

“Participants gain mentorship, professional growth, and a deeper understanding of healthcare careers while living the mission of inspiring health, wholeness and hope through every interaction,” says Tiffany Ijima, Community Outreach Manager at Adventist Health Castle.

Schools also benefit. “The program integrates what is being taught in the classroom while engaging with students in the healthcare environment,” she says. “With Compass, their graduates have a resume that sets them apart from other applicants as they pursue their next level of education.”

For Adventist Health Castle staff, the program means getting the chance to mentor future healthcare professionals. “The opportunity to partner with our local academic institutions and our community is a privilege we do not take for granted. We are grateful to be a part of our local students’ journeys toward healthcare,” Ijima says.

The Compass program works with and for the diverse community around O’ahu. And the diversity in participants and partnerships creates a stronger network of care.

By encouraging every student to explore healthcare careers in their community, Adventist Health Castle is removing barriers to care while investing in a new generation of medical professionals.
