Helping Children Build Healthy Futures Through Books
Jul 29, 2026
Since December 2019, Adventist Health Tillamook has partnered with Reach Out and Read to help children build strong foundations for lifelong learning, health, and success.
At every well-child visit from infancy through age 5, providers share guidance with parents and caregivers about the importance of early relationships, language development, and reading at home. Children also receive a new, age-appropriate book to take home and add to their personal library, helping make reading a regular part of family life.
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based program endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and implemented in healthcare settings across the country. Research has shown that families who participate are more likely to read together regularly, while children experience improvements in language development, social-emotional growth, and school readiness. Studies have also linked the program to reduced parental stress and stronger connections between healthcare providers and families.
Making a difference for local families
Over the past year, Adventist Health Tillamook clinics distributed 1,135 books to more than 400 families during well-child visits. Through these simple but meaningful interactions, providers can support not only a child’s physical health but also the cognitive and emotional development that shapes future success.
"Programs like Reach Out and Read demonstrate how healthcare can positively impact children’s lives beyond the exam room,” said Kerrin Swanson, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the Adventist Health Tillamook Women’s and Family Health Medical Office. "By encouraging parents and caregivers to read with their children and providing books they can enjoy together, we are helping create opportunities for learning, connection, and healthy development.”
The program aligns with Adventist Health Tillamook’s commitment to whole-person care and community well-being. By addressing literacy and early childhood development as part of routine healthcare visits, providers help families build skills and habits that benefit children for years to come.
