Mendocino Coast Earns CMS 5-Star Patient Experience
Sep 1, 2026
Adventist Health Mendocino Coast has been recognized among an elite group of hospitals nationwide for delivering an exceptional patient experience, earning a five-star patient survey rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Only nine hospitals recognized in California
In CMS’ most recent release of patient experience data, just 250 hospitals nationwide earned a five-star patient survey rating — including only nine hospitals in California. Adventist Health Mendocino Coast was among them.
The recognition was recently highlighted by Becker’s Hospital Review, a leading national healthcare industry publication, which published its list of hospitals earning five stars for patient experience.
A significant honor
Five stars is the highest rating a hospital can receive on CMS’ overall patient survey rating measure. “Earning five stars for patient experience is an incredible honor, especially knowing that we are one of only nine hospitals in California to receive this distinction,” said Therese Courtenay, Associate Patient Care Executive. “What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it comes directly from the experiences our patients have shared. Their trust in us is something we value deeply, and I am incredibly proud of what this rating says about the care we provide here on the Mendocino Coast.”
Data driven; quality focused
CMS patient experience star ratings are based on results from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, which captures patients’ perspectives of their hospital care. The survey measures areas such as communication with nurses and physicians, responsiveness of hospital staff, communication about medications, care transitions, cleanliness and quietness of the hospital environment, and patients’ overall rating of the hospital.
According to Becker’s Hospital Review, the most recent CMS data was updated July 22 and made public August 13, reflecting surveys collected from October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025.
Consistency is key
“An exceptional patient experience is created through hundreds of moments throughout a hospital stay,” said Dr. William Miller, Medical Director. “Our physicians play an essential role in that experience — taking the time to listen, communicate clearly and ensure patients and their families feel informed and involved in their care. That commitment extends across our entire team, from the nurses providing care at the bedside to the many team members working behind the scenes. Every person has a role in this achievement, and I am grateful for the compassion and dedication they bring to our patients every day.”
National recognition for local commitment
For a critical access hospital serving the Mendocino Coast, the national recognition demonstrates that exceptional patient experiences are being delivered right here at home.
