Adventist Health Castle is Hawaii’s Only Hospital to Achieve Both Zero MRSA AND CAUTI Infection Rates
Jun 25, 2025
Adventist Health Castle has been recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for achieving a zero rate of both MRSA infections and CAUTI (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections), a significant marker of safety and excellence.
It is the only hospital in Hawaii to achieve both infection prevention milestones during the most recent federal review period.
Nationally, Adventist Health Castle is among:
• 296 hospitals for maintaining the lowest MRSA infection rates
• 514 hospitals with the lowest CAUTI rates
These achievements were featured by Becker’s Hospital Review, based on CMS data from a 12-month federal review period spanning July 2023 to June 2024.
“Zero isn’t just a number – it’s a reflection of our values, our mission, and our love for the community we serve,” says Kris Clark, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Patient Care Executive at Adventist Health Castle, who serves in the hospital’s chief nursing officer role. “It takes constant vigilance, leadership, and the unwavering focus of every nurse, physician, environmental specialist, and team member who plays a role in infection prevention.”
MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is a type of bacteria that can be difficult to treat and dangerous for patients, especially those already vulnerable to illness or surgery. CAUTI, another serious healthcare-associated infection, can lead to complications and extended hospital stays. Avoiding even a single case of either infection over an entire year is an uncommon and meaningful achievement in hospital safety.
Unlike awards that require applications, the CMS data is public, federally verified, and unsolicited, offering an objective and transparent view of how well hospitals prevent harm.
“At a time when many in Hawaii are deeply concerned about access to high-quality, local healthcare, we hope this recognition serves as reassurance,” Clark said. “We are here, we are local, and we are delivering care that meets and often exceeds national standards.”
