Sep 22, 2025
National Farm Safety and Health Week is September 21 – 27. It is a great time to celebrate the vital role farms and farm workers play in the health of our entire community. Whether you work in farming full time or you’re more of a weekend warrior in your yard and garden, these tips can increase your safety and decrease your risk of injuries during any season of the year.
1. Protect against heat and sun.
- Wear light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen.
- Drink water often and take breaks in the shade.
2. Use protective gear.
- Put on gloves, safety glasses, boots, and hearing protection.
- Follow all chemical and pesticide label instructions.
3. Practice safe equipment use.
- Keep machinery maintained.
- Shut off equipment before cleaning or repairs.
- Avoid loose clothing around moving parts.
4. Prevent injuries.
- Lift with your legs, not your back.
- Rotate tasks to reduce strain.
- Use carts or tools instead of carrying heavy loads.
5. Take care of your health.
- Rest well, eat balanced meals, and manage stress.
- Keep vaccinations up to date.
- Treat small injuries right away.
