How Dr. Homie Built Trust Through Compassionate Care

How Dr. Homie Built Trust Through Compassionate Care

"I wanted people to know some doctors talk to you like a normal person, understand where you come from and genuinely care."

That mission became the heartbeat of David Lyons, MD, better known to many as Dr. Homie.

The idea was born during one of the darkest moments of the COVID-19 pandemic while he was serving as a senior resident at Adventist Health White Memorial. As misinformation spread and patients fought for their lives, Dr. Lyons saw a growing need for something medicine alone could not provide: trust.

"I created Dr. Homie to combat misinformation and explain health in a way that people could understand," he said. "I wanted to meet people where they were."

Shaped by life experience

Growing up in a working-class family and later experiencing life below the poverty line, serving as a military medic, and overcoming his own mental health challenges all helped shape the physician, Dr. Lyons would become. His journey taught him that healing begins with listening, compassion and human connection.

Training to serve with compassion

Those values were strengthened during his residency at Adventist Health White Memorial, where he trained alongside mentors who challenged him, believed in him and prepared him to serve communities that have historically faced barriers to care.

"It was difficult," he recalled. "But I cannot say enough about how capable I felt after residency at Adventist Health White Memorial because of everything I experienced."

Making health care more human

Today, Dr. Lyons reaches millions through educational videos while continuing to inspire future physicians. Yet his greatest lesson remains remarkably simple.

"When patients leave saying someone finally listened to them, that's what matters," he said.

His story reflects the purpose of the Adventist Health White Memorial Residency Program. Every resident is trained not only to provide exceptional clinical care, but also to build trust, communicate with compassion and care for the whole person. These physicians become leaders who return to communities like East Los Angeles and create healthier futures for generations.
