Emergency Nurse Recognized as 2025 Associate of the Year
Adventist Health Tillamook has named Richard (“Rich”) Brainerd, RN, as its 2025 Associate of the Year, recognizing his exceptional leadership, clinical excellence, and unwavering dedication to patient care in one of the hospital’s highest demand environments. In 2025, the Adventist Health Tillamook Emergency Department cared for 11,271 patient visits, and Rich’s expertise and calm, steady presence played a vital role in supporting patients and coworkers through those moments that matter most.
A senior nurse in the Emergency Department, Rich is widely respected for his ability to remain composed under pressure and for the confidence and reassurance he brings to both patients and colleagues. His nomination describes him as “an invaluable source of wisdom, leadership, and support for the entire team,” especially during the busiest and most stressful situations. In addition to his bedside excellence, Rich is deeply committed to strengthening team capability. He pursued an additional certification on his own initiative and regularly trains fellow nurses, enhancing skills across the department and elevating care for the community.
Rich’s dedication to patient safety has also been recognized through additional honors. In 2023, he received the DAISY Award, celebrating extraordinary, compassionate care. In February 2025, he earned a Good Catch Award after identifying a patient safety risk involving improperly calibrated equipment. His vigilance prevented potential errors and reinforced Adventist Health Tillamook’s culture of safety and high reliability.
“Rich’s commitment to our patients and our mission is exceptional,” said Eric Swanson, president of Adventist Health Tillamook. “He leads with humility, lifts up those around him, and consistently goes above and beyond to ensure every patient receives the best care possible. His impact on our organization and our community is truly remarkable.”
Rich’s colleagues echo this sentiment, sharing examples of his leadership, advocacy, and compassion. Whether coordinating complex care plans, guiding a new nurse through a difficult procedure, or offering clarity and comfort to a worried family, Rich embodies the values that define Adventist Health: service, integrity, teamwork, and whole person care.
