Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions answered

Q: What do I do if I am dropping off a specimen?

A: Make sure that the sample has your name and medical record number on it so that the proper tests are performed and reported to the correct patient. A registration process must be performed when you submit the sample to the laboratory, the sample cannot be dropped-off without this process.

Q: How do I get my laboratory results?

A: In general, your laboratory results are sent to you in a letter from your physician. For your security and privacy, the laboratory does not release your results to you. If you do not receive your results or have questions you can call us to receive your results or request a call from your physician's office.

Q: Can I eat or drink before having a blood test?

A: It depends on the type of blood test you're having. The registration associate who arranges your blood test will tell you whether there are any specific instructions you need to follow before your test.

You can eat and drink as normal before some blood tests. In other cases, you will be instructed not to eat or drink (other than water) before your test. This is known as a fasting blood test. You may also be told not to drink alcohol or not to smoke before your test.

If you have any questions about your blood test, ask your physician or a nurse.
