Behavioral Health Services at Adventist Health Feather River serves people with Medi-Care and Medi-Cal insurances with exceptional outpatient treatment services for adults and children with a variety of mental health disorders. Our team is dedicated to providing quality care by offering comprehensive services that are designed to meet the needs of the community.
The outpatient clinical team, consisting of psychiatrists and other licensed mental health professionals, is committed to helping patients reach their optimal level of functioning while continuing to live in the community.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a process that uses a computer program to assess breathing and heart rate. The biological sensors allow for an individual to see and hear the changes in their breath and heart rate, as they learn to control these aspects in a way that stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous System (resting state). This can improve their ability to manage anxiety and stress, increase pain tolerance, and facilitate digestive health.
Daily stressors can numb the brain. This numbness affects the brain’s ability to accurately assess and respond to external stimulation. This “fight or flight” mechanism (activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System) can be retrained through breathing techniques that can support the body’s best response to stressful situations.
Biofeedback can be useful in helping to address the effects of stress, chronic pain, anxiety, and panic attacks. It can be provided as an adjunct to psychotherapy or works in conjunction with counseling. Talk with your therapist to determine if biofeedback is an option for consideration in your treatment plan. It is not appropriate for all clients, as those with COPD and severe breathing issues are not appropriate candidates for this treatment.
