Lineman Saved by Early CPR

CPR may not be on the top of everyone’s minds. But one electrical lineman working in the eastern Columbia River Gorge knows too well how it can make a life-or-death difference.

Colton was working on power lines in The Dalles on February 1, 2024, when accidental electrical contact left him unconscious and trapped at the top of a pole. Acting quickly, his co-workers called 911 and worked with emergency responders to safely lower Colton to the ground

Fire and EMS crews immediately began CPR. Their rapid response, along with the full chain of survival — which also included EMS intervention, hospital emergency care and specialized treatment — saved his life.

Colton and his family visited with the emergency responders and Adventist Health Columbia Gorge providers and teams who saved him that day. During a special recognition ceremony, his co-workers, dispatchers, firefighters, EMS personnel, emergency physician Dr. Luke Webb and hospital staff each received a certificate of commendation and a life-saving challenge coin, symbolizing their quick thinking, teamwork and dedication to preserving life.

Many people hesitate in an emergency because they don’t know CPR or fear doing it incorrectly, but Colton’s story is proof that every second matters. Quick, effective CPR can double or even triple a person’s chances of survival. Make sure you know CPR so you can be part of the chain of survival the next time someone’s life depends on it.
