Area of Greatest Need

Empowering impact

Not every critical need can be anticipated. Across our hospitals, imaging centers, and growing network of primary and specialty care clinics, new opportunities and urgent challenges emerge every day, from equipment needs and workforce demands to gaps in access and care coordination.

Gifts to the Area of Greatest Need provide the flexibility to respond in real time, allowing resources to be directed where they will have the greatest impact. These funds often serve as the catalyst behind important improvements, enabling faster decisions, accelerating implementation, and ensuring that essential investments are not delayed.

When you give without restriction, you enable us to respond quickly, act strategically, and direct resources where they will have the greatest impact in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

Women and children’s services

Delivering a new standard of care

Access to high-quality care during pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood is critical to the long-term health of our community. Adventist Health Sierra Vista is home to San Luis Obispo County’s only Level III NICU and the county’s only dedicated inpatient pediatric unit, positioning our system as the regional center for specialized care for mothers, newborns, and children. Demand for these services continues to grow, alongside rising expectations for safety, experience, and clinical excellence.

Philanthropic investment allows care to extend beyond the baseline, strengthening labor and delivery environments, expanding access to prenatal and postpartum support, enhancing neonatal capabilities, and advancing pediatric care through specialized equipment, training, and family-centered spaces.

These investments ensure that families across the Central Coast can access exceptional, coordinated care during life’s most critical moments, without needing to leave the region.

EmPATH Unit (Behavioral Health)

Meeting urgent mental health needs

Behavioral health needs in San Luis Obispo County continue to grow in both urgency and complexity. Emergency departments are often the default point of care for individuals in crisis, yet they are not designed to provide the environment or level of support these situations require.

The planned EmPATH unit at Adventist Health Twin Cities represents a fundamentally different model, one designed to provide immediate assessment, stabilization, and connection to ongoing care in a calm, therapeutic setting. This approach improves patient outcomes, reduces readmissions, and decreases the need for inpatient psychiatric placement by addressing needs earlier and more effectively.

Philanthropic investment is essential to advancing this model, supporting the space, staffing, and infrastructure required to deliver timely, compassionate mental health care in our community.

Emergency and trauma care

When every second matters

When minutes matter, access to high-functioning emergency and trauma care determines outcomes. Adventist Health Sierra Vista is San Luis Obispo County’s only Level III trauma center, serving as a critical access point for patients across the region. Maintaining and advancing this level of care requires continuous investment in equipment, clinical training, and systems that support rapid, coordinated response.

Philanthropy strengthens this readiness, ensuring that care teams have the tools, resources, and environments needed to respond with precision when it matters most.

Neurosciences and advanced neurological care

Advancing neurological care close to home

Neurological conditions are among the most complex and time-sensitive challenges in medicine. Through our partnership with UCSF Health, Adventist Health is expanding access to advanced neurological and neurosurgical care on the Central Coast, bringing leading expertise and world-class specialty care closer to patients.

Delivering this level of care locally requires continued investment in technology, training, and program development. Philanthropic support accelerates these capabilities, allowing patients to receive specialized treatment without the burden of traveling outside the region during already difficult circumstances.

Oncology

Strengthening cancer care

A cancer diagnosis changes everything, and access to care matters at every stage. Patients across San Luis Obispo County often face difficult decisions about where to seek treatment, particularly when specialized services require travel outside the region. We are working to strengthen oncology care locally by investing in advanced technology, improving what patients and families experience during care, and expanding supportive services.

Philanthropy plays a critical role in advancing this work, improving access to care, reducing barriers, and allowing patients and families to remain close to home throughout treatment and recovery.

Surgical equipment and innovation

Investing in precision, delivering better outcomes

Surgical care continues to evolve, and access to modern technology directly impacts patient outcomes. To remain at the forefront of care, our hospitals must continually invest in advanced surgical equipment, minimally invasive techniques, and image-guided technologies.

Philanthropy provides the flexibility to accelerate these investments, enabling surgical teams to operate with greater precision, safety, and efficiency. These advancements lead to better outcomes, shorter recovery times, and improved patient experiences across a wide range of procedures.

Mission and community support

Expanding access for vulnerable populations

Access to care extends beyond hospital walls. Health outcomes are shaped by more than clinical care alone. Many individuals face barriers related to language access, transportation, housing stability, and navigating complex healthcare systems. We are working alongside community partners to address these challenges, expanding programs that improve care coordination, reduce barriers, and support patients beyond the hospital setting.

Philanthropy enables targeted, community-informed solutions that strengthen continuity of care and improve long-term outcomes across the Central Coast.
