The new residents will have two weeks of orientation, they spend the first week with the medical residents to be oriented by GMEC about the hospital and the system overall.  The second week, the residents will be oriented about the program and the pharmacy department by the current residents, preceptors, RPD, and the management team.

The residents will work under P&T approved protocols in many clinical areas of inpatient care including infectious disease, anticoagulation, diabetes services, pain management, and parenteral nutrition.  The program can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual residents to promote learning in areas where the resident is most interested in.  Residents will also be expected to serve as preceptors to pharmacy students and interns from affiliated pharmacy schools.  The residents are expected to attend various clinical and medical rounds during their rotations. The residents will also be expected to complete a research project to be presented at the Western States Conference.  Writing skill for publications is part of the residency curriculum.

The residents are involved in many decision-making processes as part of leadership training: improvement of the program, Resitrak setup, operational and clinical processes.  They have coordinated several events: accreditation survey preparation, residency showcase, open house, matching and community outreach,  and attended several committee meetings at the Pharmacy & Therapeutics,  Sepsis task force, ICU Best Practice task force,  Glycemic task force,  MERP,  etc.

The residents have opportunities to learn how to develop teaching materials, give didactic lectures, facilitate classroom discussions, and earn teaching credential from WCU as part of the training.
