Community Activities

White Memorial maintains a high level of contact with the community, participating in health screening programs and health fairs. Residents participate in many community activities including health fairs, departmental meeting, and sports participation physicals.

As a community hospital, White Memorial offers care to a patient population whose age, sex, ethnic and socioeconomic mix reflects the makeup of the community. The pathologic, emotional and social conditions encountered are of the variety and incidence which one would expect to encounter in private practice in California. This patient/pathology mix is especially appropriate for family medicine training.

Its "Helping Hands" program provides food shopping, meal preparation, child care, clothing and transportation for patients newly discharged from the hospital. In 1993, the Medical Center launched its "Healthy Community" Project which expands on the outreach services of the Family Medicine Residency Program. In 2001, WMMC established The East Los Angeles Diabetes Center which received American Diabetes Association (ADA) recognition in 2002.
