Adventist Health Sonora held the 18th Annual Joie de Vie Gala at the new Health Pavilion and Diana J. White Cancer Institute in Sonora, California, on Sept. 30, 2018. The gala was a remarkable success, raising nearly $250,000 for the Cancer Patient Support Fund. The fund assists local cancer patients with a variety of expenses such as transportation to treatments, medical copays and uncovered prescriptions, as well as utility bills and household needs. “The goal of the Cancer Patient Support Fund is to reduce anxieties and help our patients feel loved and supported by our amazing community," says Michelle Fuentes, President of Adventist Health Sonora. “Thanks to the generosity of our community of donors who support the Cancer Patient Support Fund, Adventist Health Sonora is able to not only care for the medical needs of our local cancer patients but ensure they are cared for financially, emotionally and spiritually as well.”

Nearly 500 people attended this year’s “Old Hollywood” themed gala. The black-tie optional event included dinner, live music and dancing from local favorites Swing Gitane, plus live and silent auctions and paddle-raiser donations as well as an incredible story told by three-time cancer survivor and keynote speaker, Mark Nouillan. Guests bid on nearly 200 items, ranging from exotic vacation packages to paintings and photographs by local artists and even a glamorous night with Sir Elton John!

“The generosity of our donors and this community is overwhelming," says Kara Turpen, manager of philanthropy for Adventist Health Sonora. "This kind of support for our friends and neighbors with cancer is both gratifying and humbling.”
