Sabrina jovannaElizabeth’s Story

July 27, 2020

Prior to the COVID- 19 pandemic, Elizabeth supplemented her limited income by baking bread to sell at farmers markets. But because she is immunocompromised, her doctors have asked her to shelter in place indefinitely. Without the supplemental income, the $1,500 heating and cooling unit she had planned to buy became completely out of reach. She was stuck at home with no reliable way of fending off the summer heat.

When her aging swamp cooler finally died last year, she started researching her options. “I was grateful that the swamp cooler didn’t die until October,” Elizabeth says. She had decided on a ductless heating and air conditioning wall unit recommended by the American Lung Association but found herself with no way of paying for it. “A friend told me there’s a philanthropy fund at the hospital,” Elizabeth explains.

“I called, not expecting anything, and got everything.”

Sabrina jovannaWhen I spoke with Elizabeth, it was during our first heat wave back in May. She told me she was sheltering at home and trying her best to keep cool by sitting with a bowl of ice in front of a fan.

Thanks to the generous donors to Adventist Health Sonora’s Project HOPE fund, we were able to purchase the air conditioning and heating unit for Elizabeth. We also asked our Plant Services team here at Adventist Health Sonora if they could install the unit for Elizabeth. They gladly accepted and the project was completed in early June.

“They were respectful and kind and even bought me lunch,” Elizabeth says about the crew who installed her new air conditioner. “I’m glad there are still people out there who are responsive and kind. I had no quality of life. Now I can move about my house safely and have not needed oxygen during the day at all.”

Sabrina jovannaThe mission at Adventist Health is to live God’s love by inspiring health, wholeness and hope. An air conditioner is not part of any standard medical care but our ability to provide this essential piece of equipment has had a profound effect on Elizabeth’s health. We are grateful to our family of donors for their generous gifts. Donors like you make it possible for us to extend this whole-person care to our community.
