When to see an orthopedist

Many aches and pains will go away on their own with time. You are normally referred to an orthopedist when their pain lasts for more than two weeks. Even if you do not have a chronic condition, an orthopedist can help you manage symptoms and take preventative measures to ensure it does not happen again.

If your pain does last for more than two weeks, see an orthopedist soon. You could be the beginning stages of a chronic condition, and you will want to start learning pain management techniques right away.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that surgery should only be used as a last resort treatment to aches and pains. Orthopedic surgery, while effective, is a major operation that should only be considered when all other options have been exhausted.

In many cases, patients are able to find sufficient pain relief through a combination of medication, physical therapy and other noninvasive treatments. Our orthopedists will help you learn more about all of your treatment options.
