Adventist Health and Rideout honors nurses with DAISY Awards

Each quarter, Adventist Health and Rideout honors nurses who have provided outstanding care with DAISY Awards. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is presented in medical facilities throughout the U.S. and the world to recognize the education, training, skill and compassionate care nurses provide. Patients, their friends and families, co-workers, physicians and volunteers may nominate a nurse for the award. Below is the most recent DAISY Award winner.

Congratulations Dodge Somoso our April 2018 Daisy Award recipient for “Extraordinary Nurses.”

He was selected for this award by his colleagues (quote paraphrased):

“Dodge exuberates altruistic compassionate and empathic patient centered care … He truly sets the bar for other nurses to follow … He is a leader and a mentor to our new aspiring student RNs teaching them the nursing process, while he holds integrity and the highest level … Dodge delivers excellent nursing care and his patients express so much gratitude for his care. Recently when assigned to the hospital Rapid Response Nurse, he rounded on each patient, visually assessing them to ensure their safety. On a daily basis he is a pleasure to work with. Shifts pass smoothly with less worry when he is working. Dodge simply shines and is completely deserving of this award.”

A recent patient family member’s Yelp review expressed gratitude for his tender, loving care and compassion. Both the patient and family were moved by his love for nursing and said his care reinforced his kindness.

The DAISY Award

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created in 2001 as a “thank you” to the nurses deserving of our respect, and as recognition for the education, training, skill and compassion they put into action every workday. The DAISY Award is presented in medical facilities throughout the U.S. Each DAISY Award recipient receives:

  • A certificate signed by the chief nursing officer and Mark Barnes of The DAISY Foundation. It reads, "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people."
  • A DAISY Award pin.
  • A hand-carved Shona sculpture entitled "A Healer's Touch." These serpentine stone sculptures are hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The sculptures are especially meaningful because of profound respect the Shona people pay their traditional healers. Shona healers affectionately regarded as treasures those they care for, and the well-being and safety of the healer is of community-wide importance.
