ACCESS COORDINATOR I
PATIENT REGISTRATION DEPARTMENT
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Rate: $17.514-$22.980
PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:
- Performs admitting procedures for inpatients and outpatients, performs bedside registration for ED patients
- Interviews patients and prepares all admission, consent, and required insurance authorization forms
- Accurately identifies patients and specimens for testing
- Records patient demographic, insurance, and financial information; establishes a billing folder and medical chart for each patient
- Pre-registers inpatients and outpatients, contacting insurance company and patient by phone
- Enters data into laboratory and order entry modules of the Hospital Information System
- Verifies the completeness and obtains missing information for outpatient orders at the time of registration
- Performs Medicare Medical Necessity protocols and issues Advance Beneficiary Notices when appropriate
- Obtains demographic information and provider ID numbers for non-staff outpatient providers
- Answers questions about patient preparation, specimen collection, specimen preservatives and storage requirements, and testing requirements
- Initiates and completes “Short-Reg” registration protocols for specimens collected by doctors’ offices, clinics and other facilities
- Prepare and clean Emergency Department patient beds when requested
- Scans and retrieves medical records to and from hospital archiving system
- Advises patients on hospital collection policies, requests payments, facilitates financial counseling arrangements, refers patients to outside agencies for payment assistance
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Two years’ experience in Patient Registration, Patient Accounting, or other direct patient care area of a hospital (preferably Emergency Department or Laboratory)
- Working experience as a Phlebotomist, Order-Entry Clerk or EMT preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD9 and CPT codes required
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, public, medical staff and management
- Ability to comprehend and follow written department policies and procedures
- Demonstrated skills in basic English, spelling, grammatical and mathematical skills
- Working knowledge of the use and applications of computers
- Knowledge of Medicare medical necessity compliance requirements
- Knowledge of HIPAA and EMTALA regulations
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of Medicare, Medi-Cal, Managed Care, and other insurance programs required
- Ability to communicate in Spanish highly desirable
- Capable of performing position related physical requirements
