Penile Implant Surgery

The penile implant procedure

Penile implants are intended to be permanent, so you should never decide to undergo the procedure in haste or under pressure from a partner or any other person. If you are interested in the procedure, Dr. Khourdaji will take the time to thoroughly explain every aspect of the penile implant process and its use to help you make the decision that is right for you.

Before surgery

Dr. Khourdaji does a physical examination, gives the patient an idea of what his penis will look like when the device is inflated, shows the location of the surgery incision, the positioning of the implant, and answers any questions from the patient. Later appointments and tests make sure the patient is physically able to undergo surgery.

Day of surgery

The implant procedure takes about one hour from start to finish. Afterward, the incision is closed with staples, the device is left about 50% inflated and a small drain near the incision stays in for one day. The patient can go home on the same day as the surgery, with pain medications and antibiotic pills.

After surgery

The next day, the patient comes into Dr. Khourdaji’s office to have the drain removed, and the implant device is deflated. Over the next two to six weeks, the patient receives training on how to use the device and is allowed to inflate and deflate it. Intercourse can resume about six weeks after surgery.

Safety and durability of the implant

The penile implant is extremely safe, both in terms of the surgery and the long-term use of the device. The infection rate for this surgery is 1% or less and the procedure is made even safer by the use of antibiotics during and after surgery. In addition, Dr. Khourdaji’s fellowship training and extensive experience in performing this procedure enables him to work efficiently, minimizing surgery time and patients’ exposure to potential infection.

In terms of durability, statistics show that 70% of implants are still functioning after 10 to 15 years of use.
