Some of the area's most experienced orthopedic physicians make up the Orthopedic Institute at Adventist Health Glendale (AHGL), helping patients get the most appropriate treatments to ease orthopedic conditions caused by aging, overuse or injury.

Our physicians practice in a state-of-the-art outpatient clinic with available on-site diagnostic imaging, conveniently located on the AHGL campus in the Lee Hughes Medical Building.

Philip Merritt, MDPhilip Merritt, MD
Medical Director
Joint Replacement Specialist

Dr. Philip Merritt is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a wealth of experience in many types of orthopedic surgery, from traditional joint replacement to minimally invasive techniques. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California and completed his residency at LAC + USC Medical Center. Dr. Merritt is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is committed to providing cutting-edge treatments to facilitate a faster recovery for his patients.

Michael Abdulian, MDMichael Abdulian, MD
Sports Medicine and Trauma Specialist

Dr. Michael Abdulian is a sports medicine and trauma specialist who takes a conservative approach to orthopedics, customizing treatments and surgery to the needs of each individual patient. His specialties also include joint replacement and shoulder, hip and knee arthroscopy. Dr. Abdulian is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and makes it his goal to use his expertise in orthopedic surgery to relieve pain and get his patients back to sports and the daily activities that they enjoy.

Hermoz Ayvazian, DPMHermoz Ayvazian, DPM
Podiatry

Dr. Hermoz Ayvazian specializes in podiatry with a special interest in wound care and limb preservation, particularly for people with diabetes. He is board-certified in foot and ankle surgery, as well as rear foot and ankle reconstruction. In addition to his education from the California College of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Ayvazian was selected as one of only a few physicians to train at the famous Ilizarov Limb Preservation Institute in Siberia, Russia.

Leah Cyran, MDLeah Cyran, MD
Shoulder & Elbow Specialist

Dr. Leah Cyran is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and specializes in a number of areas, including shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, arthritis, sports injuries and trauma. Her approach is to listen carefully and understand her patients in order to make accurate clinical judgments, use the most innovative medical advances with skillful surgical intervention and to do so with compassion and care. Her goal is to help patients recover mobility, strength and function while decreasing pain and disability.

Carlo Orlando, MD Carlo Orlando, MD
Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Carlo Orlando makes it his goal to continually ensure that he is providing the best treatment options for his patients to help them return to a more active lifestyle. He specializes in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, arthroscopy and MAKOplasty®. He enjoys teaching and lecturing, both on a local and international level, and donates his time and expertise to community organizations. Dr. Orlando also serves as a team physician to Glendale Community College and multiple Glendale-area high schools.

Murtaza (Mort) Rizvi, MDMurtaza (Mort) Rizvi, MD
Hand Specialist

Dr. Mort Rizvi uses his research-oriented work in hand reconstructive surgery and new technologies to help people with hand conditions and injuries. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Dr. Rizvi also completed the Joseph H. Boye's Hand & Microsurgery Fellowship at the University of Southern California. Additionally, he is a member of multiple honor societies and received the Hans R. Wilhelmsen Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Surgery. His goal is to help his patients resume their normal activities without pain.

Podiatry

Dr. Mort Rizvi uses his research-oriented work in hand reconstructive As a board-certified podiatrist, Dr. Philip Shupe specializes in surgery and treatment of foot and ankle deformities and injuries. He received his degree in Podiatric Medicine from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco and is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. When he is not treating patients, Dr. Shupe trains and instructs residents, fellows and new doctors in podiatric surgery. He enjoys watching his patients get back to their lives and families with reduced pain.

Eileen Wong, MDEileen Wong, MD
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist

Dr. Eileen Wong joins Glendale Adventist Medical Center after completing her residency in Physical Medicine & Rehab at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, she served as chief resident and was awarded the Murray Brandstater Leadership Award. Dr. Wong specializes in the non-operative care of musculoskeletal problems, utilizing injections, manual manipulation, physical therapy, acupuncture and yoga. Her special interests include sports medicine, stroke/traumatic brain injury, overuse injuries, and spasticity management. She also has experience in nerve conduction studies and electromyography.
