When death occurs suddenly and unexpectedly, survivors are at risk for complicated grief reactions. The distinctions between normal and traumatic loss, and complicated and traumatic grief, are contrasted with the traditional concepts of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Typically, loss by traumatic means (e.g., homicide/suicide, sudden unexpected, or loss of a child) is conceptualized as a traumatic event, that can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder. However, grief is a distinct individual, social, and relational experience.

Training Objectives:

  1. To implement theoretical foundations of traumatic loss and posttraumatic stress disorder.
  2. To articulate attachment theory and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE).
  3. To comprehend the function and anatomy of the HPA axis and grief.
  4. To apply specific interventions when the bereaved are dealing with traumatic or ambiguous loss.
  5. To facilitate mourning in those experiencing trauma and loss.
  6. To understand the complicating factors of the global epidemic of loneliness and its impact on the bereaved.

This training module is dedicated to those individuals who have endured the sudden, traumatic death of a loved one and those who have companioned them through their grief journey,
