The last 25 years have brought about an explosion of interest in the field of thanatology (death, dying and bereavement). The Beyond Loss Grief Training Program at Adventist Health Glendale (AHGL) is committed to providing clergy, mental health and medical professionals with the knowledge they need to become certified in grief facilitation and help assure the best outcomes for patients and their families.

The Beyond Loss Grief Training Program responds to the need that exists within our communities, medical centers, hospices, churches and other agencies for highly-trained, certified bereavement facilitators.
Training topics include:
- Facilitating the healthy grief of others.
- In-depth processing skills.
- Setting up and running grief support groups.
- Suicidology and different kinds of loss.
- Grief of children and teens.
- Health and spirituality.
- Mindfulness and grief.
- Anatomy and grief.
- Cultural diversity in bereavement.
- Caregiver qualities and best care practices.

Faculty Presenters
Rev. Alice Parsons Zulli, FT, BCPC, Chaplain
Alice is an ordained minister and hospital chaplain with a specialty in
clinical thanatology and bereavement education. She also holds a fellow
in thanatology, a fellow in ministerial studies and is a nationally certified
bereavement facilitator, certified grief counselor and a board-certified
pastoral counselor. Alice founded the Beyond Loss program at AHGL in 1990
and is the program director. She has also co-founded several other organizations,
including the Consortium of Bereavement Professionals and the Center for
Grief and Loss for Children.
Adena Sarkian
Adena Sarkian obtained her Clinical Psychology Masters with emphasis on
Marriage Family Therapy from Pepperdine University. Throughout her academic
career, Adena conducted research on cultural influences affecting narrative
of autobiographies. As a certified grief counselor, Adena holds great
pride in supporting individuals when they are in their most vulnerable
state. Adena currently facilitates grief support groups within the Beyond
Loss Program at AHGL and provides counseling to individuals struggling
with anxiety and depression.
