GAMC Receives 4-Star Rating from CMS

Awards & Recognition

For the first time ever, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its Star rating—a rating system that will greatly help consumers objectively measure the quality of each hospital. The CMS rated thousands of hospitals across America on a one- to five-star scale, with Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC) receiving an impressive four out of five stars. A four star rating was given to only ten hospitals out of 57 rated hospitals within a 25 mile radius of GAMC. One hospital scored a five star rating this year. The score four out of five stars places GAMC in the top 20 percent of hospitals in the region.

“We are tremendously proud to have been awarded four stars by CMS and thankful to all the associates and physicians for delivering the excellent care that has led us to this rating,” says Beth Zachary, president and CEO, Adventist Health Southern California Region. “When so much decision making is in the hands of our consumers, we pride ourselves on providing these stellar ratings to make their choice easier.”

CMS has defined a set of 64 of the more than 100 measures on categories such as: Mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. “Based on several quality measures, GAMC and Adventist Health are aligning objectives and goals with federal standards,” explains Beth.

“GAMC scored above the national average in a few quality measures including mortality and safety of care. In other words, our patients experience less hospital acquired infections and complications, and they have better outcomes. This is why this rating matters; it is about making it better for our patients,” explains Despina Kayichian, MD, vice president, Medical Affairs and Quality. “We strive to continually improve and one day make GAMC a five star designated facility,” adds Dr. Kayichian.

The CMS rating is one of many national rating systems and quality measurement criteria. The four star quality rating is in addition to GAMC receiving an ‘A’ for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group as well as a silver-level Beacon Award for excellence.
