Melissa O’Dell, RN, Receives 2017 Jan Green Service Excellence Award

Awards & Recognition Melissa O’Dell, RN, lives the mission of Adventist Health through her work in the emergency department. She is the 2017 Jan Green Service Excellence Award recipient.

Melissa was nominated by two coworkers and selected by the ER leadership team.  “She always comes to work with a smile on her face and willing to tackle the day,” team members commented in her nomination. “She is kind and gentle with all her patients. She treats everyone with respect.”

Working in the ER, Melissa enjoys the fast pace and that there’s always something different happening. More than that, she says working with people is the best part of her job. “I’ve always loved people and nursing gave me the chance to really help others,” she says. “In the ER you’re asking a stranger to put their life in your hands. We have a unique opportunity to connect and build trust. I love to help in any way I can.”

Southeast Portland is home for Melissa. She graduated from Franklin High School and Mt. Hood Community College. Beginning in Adventist Health’s RN residency program, Melissa has been working in the ER for three years.

“It takes lots of working together for our team to provide fast and safe care for our patients,” Melissa says “Being part of a team is so important and we are so supportive of each other.”

The Jan Green Service Excellence Award is presented each year to an exceptional member of the ER team. It is named for Jan Green, a beloved unit secretary who died of ovarian cancer in 2012. Her enthusiasm, positivity and spirit of service continue to inspire ER staff, and each year they present an award in Jan’s honor.
