St. Helena Hospital's Coon Joint Replacement Institute Awarded Prestigious Advanced Certification for Hip and Knee by the Joint Commission

Awards & Recognition

St. Helena, CA - January 23, 2017, St. Helena Hospital Napa Valley has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. It is the second hospital in California to receive the prestigious certification for its orthopedic program. The award is a symbol of the highest quality, safety and care, and recognizes compliance with The Joint Commission’s strict national standards.

St. Helena Hospital’s Coon Joint Replacement Institute underwent a rigorous onsite evaluation when a reviewer from The Joint Commission conducted an exhaustive analysis of care provided to patients requiring hip and knee joint replacements. They examined all aspects, including pre-operative evaluation, the surgery itself and the patient’s recovery in the hospital following the procedure. The Joint Commission evaluated specifics involving patient education leading up to the procedure, the safety and success of the surgery, and that patients can function independent at home in the weeks after hospital discharge. Achieving advanced certification reinforces why Coon Joint Replacement Institute remains a leader when it comes to providing comprehensive, coordinated care that addresses the patient needs from the time of their initial consultation to their post-surgical follow-up care.

“This Advanced Certification means we have set the standard for best orthopedic practices,” said Thomas Coon, MD. “It’s reinforcement to our patients that our orthopedic surgeons performing total hip and knee replacements adhere to the highest standards of care, and their procedures result in superior clinical outcomes. Our top priority at the Institute is innovation and quality outcomes.”

Established in 2016 and awarded for a two-year period, the advanced certification was developed in response to the growing number of patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement surgery, as well as the increased focus on evidence-based patient care as it relates to pain management, quality of life, and having enough mobility to return to their normal, everyday activities.

With over 1,200 joint replacements performed each year, Coon Joint Replacement Institute has earned a reputation for it quality incomes and is the recipient of many awards, including “America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement by Healthgrades” for four years in a row, “Top 100 Hospitals with Great Orthopedic Programs” by Becker’s Review, to name a few.
