Howard Memorial Hospital Recognized for Employee Wellness Program

Employee News WILLITS, CA – Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital (HMH) was one of 10 companies and organizations nationwide to receive gold-level recognition in 2017 for its commitment to workplace wellness. The Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) uses a rigorous set of criteria when evaluating organizations that compete to be recognized as among America’s healthiest companies.

The Well Workplace Gold Award recognizes quality and excellence in worksite health at a level with a comprehensive program that produces results. HMH is one of nine Adventist Health organizations to receive the gold-level recognition; two additional Adventist Health organizations received silver recognition. In total, 11 of the 15 companies to receive a WELCOA award in 2017 were affiliated with Adventist Health.

HMH’s wellness program is led by a wellness committee made up of employees from various departments who collaborate to motivate employees through innovative promotions, education and activities. Meeting the WELCOA Well Workplace criteria has been a goal of HMH and Adventist Health since 2011 when the wellness committee was formed.

“We believe that improving the health of our community starts with our own team. They are our best asset and taking care of them is just as important as the work that they do with taking care of our patients. This national recognition affirms that we’re on the right track”, shares Jason Wells, HMH CEO.

The wellness team meets regularly to come up with programs to help their fellow employees stay healthy. Last year, HMH staff participated in a “Walktober” challenge, in which employees were encouraged to take walks around the hospital campus. This year, the wellness team started implementing a stoplight food labeling system in the restaurant to help employees and community members make healthy choices. Each item was carefully examined by a registered dietitian, looking at its calorie, sodium, fiber and sugar content. Enterprise-wide, the LivingWell whole-person health and wellness program provides additional resources and incentives for healthy behaviors.

The hospital also offers “Happy at Howard” events for stress reduction, emotional wellness and relationship building. Support is also offered to those who want to quit smoking through free smoking cessation classes. Discounted gym memberships and fitness centers is also available to employees.

“I am inspired by the results we see from our wellness activities and programs. Each year, we have consistently seen a reduction in the overall health risk of our employees and the value in that is immeasurable. Our employees are living healthier, fuller lives and we hope that the activities and support provided will continue to inspire our staff in their wellness journeys,” concludes Leslie Smith, employee wellness coordinator.
