Love it or Leave it - Super Bowl Edition

Adventist Health Fitness, Recipes

With the big game just a few days away it’s easy to make food choices that aren’t great for our heart or our waist. But don’t worry, with a few tweaks you can still eat well and sustain your healthy lifestyle.

Love it or Leave it – Chips and Dip

Love it: Air popped popcorn with a novel topping (ideas below)

Leave it: Tortilla chips and dip

Why?: This high-fiber choice contains around 100 calories per 3-cup serving, where just 6 chips pack 140-160 calories.

Brown Paper Bag Microwave Popcorn

  • 1/4 c. unpopped popcorn kernels
  • 1 brown paper lunch bag
  • Tape

Seasoning if desired (see below)

  1. Place popcorn in the brown paper lunch bag.
  2. Fold the bag over twice, tape it shut, and gently push the air out.
  3. Pop for 2 1/2-3 minutes or until there are 3-4 seconds between pops.
  4. Remove the bag from the microwave and carefully open the bag (caution: HOT STEAM!)
  5. Pour into a large bowl, eat as is or season

To Season: Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil, season as desired

  • Cumin-Yeast Mix Popcorn: 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast, ½ teaspoon of cumin, and a pinch of cayenne pepper, toss again and serve
  • Seasoning Mix Popcorn: add 1-2 tablespoons of your favorite Garlic Bread, Chili, Cajon Seasoning or even Mac & Cheese powder, toss again and serve.

Love it or Leave it – Potato Salad

Love it: Veggie kabobs or veggie platter

Leave it: Traditional potato salad

Why?: Loaded with nutrient rich vegetables instead of added fats (mayonnaise), consider serving with a vinaigrette or hummus for dipping.

Love it or Leave it – Burgers

Main Dish

Love it: Portabello burger

Leave it: Traditional burger

Why?: In addition to reducing calorie and saturated fat intake, the mushroom burger serves up a healthy dose of folate, selenium, and fiber.

Love it or Leave it – Mayo

Love it: Mustard, tomato, lettuce, pickles, salsa or hot sauce

Leave it: Mayonnaise, cheese, avocado or guacamole

Why?: Taking off the cheese and skipping the mayo can save up to 200 calories and 10 grams of fat.

Love it or Leave it – Soda

Love it: Iced tea or fruit infused water

Leave it: Soda (regular or diet)

Why?: The average can of sugar-sweetened soda or fruit punch provides about 150 calories, almost all of the them from sugar (approximately 10 teaspoons full).
