Know Your Numbers: Fighting Heart Disease One Change at a Time

Heart Health

February is American Heart Month, when Walla Wallans should schedule a wellness exam with their primary care provider to review their heart health. Important numbers to know include:

  • Blood pressure
  • Weight, height and waist size
  • Cholesterol levels, both good (HDL) and bad (LDL)
  • Blood sugar

Knowing these heart health numbers is important, because 800,000 Americans die from cardiovascular diseases every year, and these numbers can act as a warning sign for heart conditions. But while biometric numbers are significant and a good starting point, the numbers that count are those people can use to actually prevent or reverse heart disease and other chronic health conditions. A few are listed below.

We’re asking Walla Wallans to consider their heart health numbers this month and to take action against preventable diseases. We hope you’ll help us share this heart healthy message with our community this February.

  • 20 — Just 20 minutes after you quit smoking, your blood pressure decreases. Your chance of having a heart attack drops after two days. And the risk of heart disease is cut in half one year after you quit.
  • 5 — Eating a minimum of five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day can help prevent heart disease. A diet rich in foods high in vitamins, nutrients and minerals helps prevent conditions that lead to heart disease, including diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
  • 5–10 — Losing 5-10 percent of extra weight can significantly improve heart health. Added weight stresses the heart as it works harder to pump blood throughout the body. Losing weight can lower blood pressure, reduce the overtime your heart is working, and improve cholesterol levels.
  • 7–9 — Adults need at least 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Getting the proper amount of quality shut-eye reduces the risk for heart disease.
  • 30 — Getting at least 30 minutes of moderate activity each day will improve heart health.
  • 1 — You have one heart, so help it find love this Heart Month by introducing it to the heart health numbers that count.
