Two moms with the same birthday get the best present of all – a healthy newborn baby born at Ukiah Valley Medical Center

UKIAH, CA – Two mothers received the best gift ever this week – when their babies were born on their birthdays!  What makes it even more special is that they gave birth on the same day, Wednesday, September 2, at Ukiah Valley Medical Center’s (UVMC) Family Birth Center.
Maria Tepale Coyote Calt gave birth to her new daughter Evelyn on September 2 at 4:37 a.m., and two hours later, at 6:40 a.m. Lindsay Costa welcomed her new baby daughter Giana.

Calt’s precious baby girl is welcomed by her father Indalecio, brother and twin sisters.  Baby Evelyn was five days early and weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and 19 ½ inches long at birth. This was Maria’s third time delivering at the Birth Center where she has always loved the care she’s received. Mary Swensen, RNC, was working the day she gave birth, and was one of the nurses working when Maria herself was born 27 years ago. “My experience has always been great. I love the nurses, the facility, and the exceptional care I receive,” Calt says.
Baby Giana Costa is Lindsay and her husband Dan’s first child and is welcomed by grandparents, an aunt, uncle and cousins that live in the Ukiah area.  She weighed 7 pounds and 7 ounces and was 20 ½ inches long.
Costa says it was definitely the best gift she could ever ask for. “We are overjoyed and excited to tell our little girl the story of her birth someday.”
The odds of having a baby on the mother’s birthday are about 133,000 to 1. Having two mothers do this together on the same day is 1 in 17 million. “This has never happened before at UVMC, so we decided to give the families a birthday party,” says Casey Ford, director of perinatal services at UVMC. “It is a miraculous day, and the greatest blessing is when your child is born. But it’s even more special to have your baby born on your birthday. The Family Birthing Center staff and I are happy to celebrate this unique occasion and privileged to be a part of their birthing and birthday experience.”
To further celebrate this occasion Ellie’s Mutt Hutt, a local restaurant, donated gift certificates for each family to celebrate all four birthdays.
The Family Birth Center, located at 275 Hospital Drive in Ukiah offers a state-of-the art facility, with large private birthing suites and a Special Care Nursery. The birth center also offers a variety of educational and support classes for expectant moms and caregivers. For more information about classes provided, please call 707-463-7550 or visit
