Grieving During the 'Most Wonderful Time of the Year'

Adventist Health Mind

Seasons' greetings are full of peace, hope and joy, but when you've suffered the loss of a loved one, the holidays may not feel very holly-jolly.

Loss doesn't have to be felt alone. Knowing how difficult this festive time can be, Adventist Medical Center Hospice organizes the Angels and Bows Reception each December. This special event gives grieving family and friends a chance to gather with others who are also experiencing loss.

Remembering Together

The holidays can bring a fresh wave of pain. Being with others who understand that gives families help in preparing for the season. That's part of what makes the Angels and Bows Reception so special.

During the reception, those who wish can request to have their loved one's name read during a special bell ringing ceremony. Dr. Terry Johnsson will provide a message of healing and hope during this year's event, which will be on Sunday, Dec. 13. The Portland Threshold Choir will share inspirational songs.

Many members of the hospice team also attend each year. This gives families a chance to reconnect to the hospice caregivers who worked tirelessly to help them during truly difficult times.

After the program, a dessert reception gives hurting family and friends a chance to relax together beside beautiful decorations and towering Christmas trees covered in memorial ornaments.

A Special Tribute

Angels and Bows OrnamentThese angels and collectible ornaments also serve as a tribute to loved ones, both lost and living. They are bought as tributes to people who have special meaning to the purchaser.

The funds raised through these sales contribute to hospice's ability to provide end-of-life comfort and family support regardless of a patient's insurance or financial situation. In fact, since 1988, Adventist Health Hospice has provided physical, spiritual and emotional support for more than 7,000 terminally ill patients and their families.
