New Cardiologist Joins Sierra Cardiology

Sonora Regional Medical Center is pleased to welcome Atul Ramachandran, MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained cardiologist who has joined James Comazzi, MD; Eric Hemminger, MD; Rajiv Maraj, MD and Eugene Margolis, MD. He is accepting new patients at Sierra Cardiology in Sonora and at Angels Camp Family Medical Center.

Dr. Ramachandran has practiced in Omaha, Nebraska, since 1998 and brings a wealth of training and experience to compliment the cardiovascular services at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He earned a bachelor’s of science in biology and doctor of medicine degree from Creighton University in Omaha, completed an internship in internal medicine at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and completed his residency and fellowship training back in Omaha at Creighton University School of Medicine and University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Throughout his tenure in Omaha, Dr. Ramachandran served in numerous positions including Chairman of Internal Medicine and member of the Physician Excellence Committee. He has served as clinical instructor at Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Ramachandran also served as principal investigator or sub-investigator on dozens of studies evaluating new treatment options for various heart conditions.

Dr. Ramachandran practices general cardiology and has interests in preventive cardiology, heart rhythm issues and pacemakers. He also focuses on the whole patient. “I believe in individualizing the patient,” he explains. “I believe in evidence-based medicine, but personalized for each patient.” Dr. Ramachandran also encourages and empowers his patients to include diet and exercise in their treatment plans. He says, “I’ve seen people who’ve made a drastic lifestyle change and made big improvements in their cardiovascular health.”

Dr. Ramachandran has moved to Sonora with his wife and twin boys. They visited Yosemite last year and fell in love with the area. The timing was perfect as Sonora Regional Medical Center had just begun recruiting efforts for a new cardiologist. Dr. Ramachandran and his family look forward to exploring the area with hiking and biking as well as continuing their interest in tennis and basketball.

In addition, Dr. Ramachandran’s wife, an internal medicine specialist, plans to start practicing in Sonora after her family has settled in to their new home and has become familiar with their new community.
