County's First Hybrid Cardiac Cath Lab Opens at Simi Valley Hospital

Ventura County's first hybrid cardiovascular interventional suite is now open at Simi Valley Hospital. The uniqueness of this suite is its ability to seamlessly convert from a standard cardiac catheterization setup to a complete open-heart surgical suite whenever a patient's condition warrants it.

Simi Valley Hospital's hybrid Cardiac Cath Lab is a revolutionary concept that enables cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists and vascular surgeons to work closely together, making the transition from catheter-based procedures to open-heart surgery seamless and efficient. The combination of these functions is especially important in a critical care situation, when every minute counts. Time is truly of the essence when the heart starts to fail; the time it requires to prep and move a patient to a surgical suite can sometimes be a matter of life and death. With the ability to operate right in the Cath Lab, surgeons are able to react quickly, which can drastically improve patient outcomes.

Used to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions affecting the blood vessels of the heart, the catheterization lab gives physicians access to leading-edge equipment and computers for fluoroscopy, digital imaging and 3-D angiography. Combined with the outstanding skills of the hospital's interventional cardiologists and surgeons, the new facility enables Simi Valley Hospital to provide high-quality care for the community's cardiac patients.

The Cardiac Cath Lab started providing some services to patients in December 2013. However, the hybrid component was not operational until the California Department of Public Health announced the granting of the license on March 9, 2015.
