Rideout Health Once Again Puts Healthy Habits Center Stage for Kids!

Rideout Press Releases

Everyone knows how important it is to teach kids about getting fit and staying healthy – especially during a new school year! Rideout Health agrees so much that they are presenting the 2nd great season of what has already become a hit with local elementary and middle schools – the Rideout Healthy Kids School Assembly!

Rideout Health has always been committed to community outreach, and Rideout is historically a major supporter of the arts for young people in the Yuba-Sutter region, so the Rideout Healthy Kids Assemblies are a perfect fit. The project is managed by Linda Plummer, Rideout Health Marketing Manager who has been instrumental and well-known in the past for championing great causes involving local youth and local artists. Plummer reached out to a long-time colleague, Yuba-Sutter award-winning theatre teacher and director Paul DeMeritt who will partner with Rideout Health to present "Rideout Healthy Kids, The Musical!" a 45 minute high energy musical theatre program of live music, drama, jokes and dance encouraging students to embrace "The 8 Healthy Habits:"

  • Always eat breakfast!
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables!
  • Limit – or eliminate – sweetened drinks!
  • Limit "screen time" (TV, video, internet)!
  • Increase your physical activity!
  • Eat meals together as a family – sitting down!
  • Be positive about food!
  • Don't criticize yourself and others about weight!

Yuba-Sutter elementary and middle school students will laugh, applaud and even participate onstage when the Rideout's Healthy Kids Team comes to visit this spring. Comprised of 5 talented actors chosen from the Yuba-Sutter region (and all alums of Yuba-Sutter schools!), the team showcases contemporary music and popular cultural references – including hilarious Shakespeare and a "vegetable eating vampire" – to make their point.

Regional auditions were held with actors and technicians participating from around the greater Sacramento area - but interestingly (and encouragingly - but not surprisingly) the entire team selected consists of all Yuba-Sutter natives and local talent. The actors and technicians chosen are some of Yuba-Sutter's brightest and best known performing artists: Alexandria Mazerolle, graduate of Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts, Candee Jensen Parker, Yuba City High grad and former MCAA choreographer/Dance teacher and Yvette Jones, graduate of Marysville High School. Both Mazerolle and Parker are Yuba College graduates; Parker boasts a B.A. in dance from U.C. Davis, Jones has her applied sciences/business administration degree from Heald College and Mazerolle is completing a Communication degree at Sacramento State University. Actor Alex Samay is a River Valley High School graduate, long-time star with the FCS Players at Faith Christian School, a current Yuba College theatre major and an Elly Award nominee for the Acting Company's recent production of Bullshot Crummond. Associate Director, Tour Manager and actor as well is Lindsay Roberts, a Faith Christian and Bethany University alum and local children's theatre director. The technical team consists of Larry Badger, former editorial team member for the Appeal-Democrat and CEO of Joyful Sound, Yuba-Sutter's premiere audio engineering company; Matthew Hadley, a senior and active theatre student at Faith Christian School and Steven Sproat, another River Valley alum and currently audio technician and youth ministry intern at Calvary Christian Center of Yuba City. Rounding out the team is Paul DeMeritt, well known to local audiences as director of the FCS Players, Faith Christian's award-winning theatre program, independent theatre and special events consultant and past director of Way, Way, Way Off Broadway, Beckwourth Frontier Days, the Yuba City Centennial, Rideout Health's 100th Anniversary Celebration and 2012 Rideout Tower Groundbreaking. In addition, Jones, Roberts and Parker are all young moms - giving them a special understanding of just how important healthy living is for kids. All in all, the team represents dozens of years of training and performance and hundreds of productions - and brings an incredible level of talent, energy, enthusiasm and dedication to this project.

Rideout Healthy Kids Assemblies features professional quality talent, music, sound, effects and sets – but the show costs nothing for local schools – the Assemblies are a gift from Rideout Health to Yuba-Sutter students, their schools and their families. Administrators and teachers also receive a Rideout Healthy Kids School Resource Kit providing pre-show planning info, fun, hands-on lesson plans and reproducible activity sheets to follow up on the enthusiasm generated by the show. Students will each receive a "Healthy Habits Checklist" so they can chart their progress towards super health and fitness!

The Rideout Healthy Kids team will appear and headline the stage this Saturday, September 13 for 3 performances at the Rideout Clinic Health Fair being held from 9 am – 3 pm at 989 Plumas Street, Yuba City and assembly performances are scheduled at local schools beginning September 17 and continuing through November 7 for the Fall 2014 tour, with a Spring 2015 Tour already in the planning stages. Rideout Health is committed to continuing this project for up to 3 years, intending to reach every Yuba-Sutter elementary and middle school student and their families with the message of good health and healthy living! The show will continue to be revised, adapted and updated to not only keep current with music and cultural highlights, but future productions will include other topics vital to Yuba-Sutter youth and their families, including peer pressure, bullying, drug abuse, positive self-image, finding and being a part of a support group, mentoring and more.

Rideout Health is currently scheduling the Spring 2015 season of performance and performance slots still remain; if local teachers and administrators have any questions or would like to schedule a Rideout Healthy Kids Assembly, they may contact:
