Olympic Gold Medalist and Cancer Survivor, Scott Hamilton, Announced as Featured Speaker for ‘Heroes of the Heart’ Gala

Event Adventist Health Foundation will host the third annual “Heroes of the Heart” Gala on Oct. 30 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Nines in downtown Portland, an evening dedicated to celebrating the many projects the Foundation serves. This year’s event will highlight the premier cancer services and advanced cancer treatment technologies offered at Adventist Medical Center in Portland.

Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton, a four-time world figure skating champion and cancer survivor, will serve as this year’s keynote speaker. After overcoming testicular cancer in 1997 and being diagnosed with a benign, non-cancerous brain tumor in 2004, Hamilton lives by his personal motto: “The only disability in my life is a bad attitude.”

The Foundation selected Hamilton, the most recognized figure skating star in the world, so he could share his story and optimism with event attendees. As a cancer survivor, he is a constant reminder that with fortitude and determination, anything is possible.

“A man of faith, Scott's inspiring story never ceases to impress,” said John Korb, Adventist Health Foundation Executive Director. “His clarity about living the life he’s been given has inspired thousands of people and we wanted to provide this opportunity at the Gala,” Korb added.

Hamilton also embodies a number of the Foundation’s guiding principles that mark him as a hero. As a role model, he contradicts the saying that "good guys finish last" and as a humanitarian, he avails himself to causes that can better society.

2014 Heroes include Oregon State Representative Greg Matthews; Bob Miller, Radio Personality and Operation Santa Claus. An “Amazing Youth Award” will be announced at the Gala.

Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon is the 2014 Gala keynote sponsor. Adventist Medical Center Medical Staff, California Emergency Physicians America - Portland, LLC, Generations, LLC, and PKA Architects are presenting sponsors.

Heroes of the Heart will be held at the Nines located at 525 SW Morrison St, Portland. Valet parking at the Nines is available for $15, but guests are encouraged to use public transportation or self-park garages to avoid congestion.

Event tables (seating for 10) are $1,250 and individual tickets are $125. Tickets for the event can be purchased online. Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
