Attention to Superior Patient Care Gives Adventist Health an “A” for Safety

Awards & Recognition

Adventist Medical Center in Portland continues to create a culture of excellence where physicians and team members treat each patient as if it were their own mother or father. This philosophy of care helped AMC receive the coveted “A” grade in hospital safety presented by The Leapfrog Group, an independent healthcare industry watchdog. More than 2,500 U.S. hospitals were graded. AMC was awarded an “A” grade for excelling in protecting patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.

“Doing the right thing for every patient every time helps create that culture of safety,” says Cindy Nutter, chief nursing officer at Adventist Medical Center. “Every team member member, from the person cleaning rooms to the physician delivering lifesaving care, owns our quality outcomes. Our commitment to delivering clinical best practices, implementing innovative technology and listening to patient needs means patients will be safer and heal faster.”

Leapfrog uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital's overall success in keeping patients safe from infections, injuries, and medication errors. Data comes from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, plus Leapfrog's own survey.

Participation in the Leapfrog study is voluntary. The hospital has chosen to have their quality outcomes scrutinized and regularly posts quality indicators online in order to provide transparency to the community.
