Mendocino Region Attracting New Physicians

A recent New York Times Article, 52 Places to Go in 2014, named the Mendocino Coast as the third on the list of 52 places to visit, mentioning it as “A glorious new preserve for the public.” So it seems fitting that a longtime New York state resident Joanne LaMonica, M.D., urologist, has chosen Mendocino county, more specifically, Ukiah to practice medicine.

When asked what made her decision to uproot from New York State, Dr. LaMonica shared, “My family and I were looking for a lifestyle change. That's what brought us to Ukiah. This week the temperature in New York was below zero. We've had enough brutal winters, along with the overall stress of living in New York. My sister moved to the West Coast a few years ago. We all miss her and her family very much. All of those factors influenced our decision to move.”

As a general urologist, Dr. LaMonica specializes in treating both male and female patients and brings extensive skills in performing minimally invasive, advanced laparoscopic procedures. She will be joining Robert E. Blackwelder, M.D., who has been providing excellent urological care in Ukiah for over 35 years, and Martha Kilkenny, F.N.P, who has been practicing with the group for 17 years, and Bonnie Henderson, F.N.P., who has been practicing with the group for 8 years. Together the team provides comprehensive urology care for men, women, and children.

According to Gwen Matthews, CEO of Ukiah Valley Medical Center, “The addition of Dr. LaMonica is so welcomed by our urology practice and our team of healing professionals at UVMC. As an experienced urologist, she joins Dr. Blackwelder in the care and treatment of both men and women. She brings extensive experience using minimally invasive techniques and procedures, which help reduce recovery time – methods today’s health care conscious consumers can appreciate.”

In reference to the New York Times article, Dr. LaMonica also said, “We’re [our family is] looking forward to many new coastal adventures” since they are all avid scuba divers.

Dr. LaMonica is now accepting new patients at the Urology office in Ukiah at 260 Hospital Drive, Suite 201. To schedule an appointment please call (707) 462-1928.
