GAMC Ranked 5th in Nation for Lowest Mortality Rate

General

In a recently published Modern Healthcare survey, which published a list of hospitals with the highest and lowest 30-day risk-adjusted mortality rates in the U.S., Glendale Adventist Medical Center was listed number 5 as determined by data to have the lowest mortality rate in the country.

“Our hospital launched an initiative titled 'Performance at a Higher Level' that embarked on transforming our hospital from a good community hospital to a great regional medical center that offers world class care. We are honored to receive this ranking because it is another endorsement of our commitment to improve the health care of our patients and community,” said Arby Nahapetian MD, MPH, vice president for Medical Affairs and Quality at GAMC.

The Hospital Compare data set contains hospital-specific 30-day-risk standardized mortality and readmission measures for patients hospitalized for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. These measures are produced from Medicare claims and enrollment data using statistical techniques that adjust for patient-specific characteristics and differences between hospitals in patient populations. The three mortality models estimate hospital-specific, risk-standardized, all-cause 30-day mortality rates for patients hospitalized with a principal diagnosis of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia. All-cause mortality is defined as death from any cause within 30 days, regardless of whether the patient dies while still in the hospital or after discharge. The three readmission models estimate hospital-specific, risk-standardized, all-cause 30 day readmission rates for patients discharged alive to a non-acute care setting with a principal diagnosis of heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia. The mortality and readmission measures are based on three years of data. This currently includes Glendale Adventist Medical Center data from the time period of July 2009 to June 2012.

According to the CMS data from Hospital Compare, the national average for the measure is 15.2 percent.
